Alaeddin grew up during a period when the Seljuk state was dealing with internal succession struggles and external threats.

His early life was strongly influenced by the political competition within the Seljuk dynasty. After the death of his father, the question of succession became complicated, and Alaeddin Keykubat eventually became involved in a struggle for power with his brother, Izzeddin Keykavus I.

Alaeddin was initially associated with the city of Tokat, where he established himself as a powerful political figure. His opposition to his brother eventually led to his imprisonment. After political changes within the Seljuk state, Alaeddin was released and eventually reached an agreement that allowed him to become Sultan.

Becoming Sultan

Alaeddin Keykubat became Sultan of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate in 1220. His accession marked the beginning of a period of considerable strength for the Seljuk state.

When he came to power, Anatolia was strategically important because it connected the Mediterranean world, the Middle East and Central Asia. Alaeddin understood the importance of controlling major roads, ports and fortified cities. His government therefore focused heavily on strengthening the state’s military and economic position.

One of his major objectives was to secure the Seljuk territories against both internal rebellions and external enemies. Through military campaigns and diplomacy, he expanded and consolidated Seljuk influence in several parts of Anatolia.

Military Campaigns and Expansion

Alaeddin Keykubat’s reign included several important military campaigns. He faced threats from neighboring powers as well as local rulers who challenged Seljuk authority.

One of the most significant developments of his reign was the strengthening of Seljuk control along the Mediterranean coast. The conquest of Kalororos, later known as Alanya, became particularly important. The city offered access to the Mediterranean and provided the Seljuks with an important strategic and commercial port.

Alaeddin Keykubat strengthened Alanya by improving its defenses and establishing major structures. The famous Kızıl Kule (Red Tower) in Alanya is associated with his reign and became one of the most recognizable examples of Seljuk military architecture.

His military policy was not based only on direct conquest. Diplomacy and political alliances were also important tools. Alaeddin attempted to maintain relationships with neighboring rulers when this served Seljuk interests, allowing the Sultanate to concentrate its resources on more immediate threats.

Economic Growth and Trade

Alaeddin Keykubat recognized that military strength depended on economic stability. During his reign, the Seljuk Sultanate became an important center of regional trade.

Anatolia’s geographical position allowed merchants to travel between the Mediterranean, Iran, the Caucasus and other parts of Asia. Alaeddin supported commercial activity by protecting important trade routes and improving infrastructure.

The Seljuks constructed numerous caravanserais along major roads. These facilities provided merchants and travelers with places to rest, store goods and obtain protection during long journeys. This infrastructure helped encourage international trade and strengthened the economic importance of Anatolian cities.

The development of ports and commercial centers also increased the Sultanate’s connections with Mediterranean merchants. Under Alaeddin Keykubat, trade became an important source of wealth and political influence for the Seljuk state.

Architecture and Cultural Development

Alaeddin Keykubat’s reign is also strongly associated with Seljuk architecture. Numerous buildings constructed or developed during his rule reflected the wealth and confidence of the Sultanate.

Important examples include Alanya Castle, the Kızıl Kule, palaces, mosques, madrasas, bridges and caravanserais. One of the most famous royal residences connected with Alaeddin was the Kubadabad Palace, built near Lake Beyşehir.

Seljuk architecture during this period combined practical military design with highly detailed artistic decoration. Stone carving, geometric patterns, inscriptions and monumental entrances became important characteristics of the period.

These surviving structures provide valuable evidence of the political power, artistic development and technological capabilities of the Anatolian Seljuks during Alaeddin’s reign.

Relations with the Mongols

Alaeddin Keykubat ruled during a period when the Mongol Empire was becoming a major power across Asia and the Middle East. The growing Mongol threat created a difficult strategic situation for the Seljuk Sultanate.

Alaeddin attempted to maintain the independence and stability of his state through a combination of military preparation and diplomacy. His reign ended before the Mongol influence became fully dominant over the Anatolian Seljuk state, but the political developments of his time laid the groundwork for the challenges that his successors would later face.

Death of Alaeddin Keykubat

Alaeddin Keykubat died in 1237. His death marked the end of one of the strongest periods of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate.

He was succeeded by his son Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev II. The political stability and strength achieved during Alaeddin’s reign gradually faced serious challenges under his successors, including internal divisions and increasing Mongol pressure.

Historical Legacy

Alaeddin Keykubat I remains one of the most significant figures in medieval Anatolian history. His importance comes not only from his military achievements but also from his efforts to strengthen trade, improve infrastructure, develop cities and promote architecture.

His reign represented a high point for the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. Cities such as Alanya became major strategic centers, trade routes across Anatolia flourished, and numerous architectural monuments from his period survived for centuries.

Today, Alaeddin Keykubat is particularly remembered through the historical monuments associated with his reign. Alanya Castle, the Kızıl Kule and Kubadabad Palace are among the most notable reminders of his rule.

For this reason, Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat holds an important place in the history of the Seljuk period and medieval Anatolia. His reign from 1220 to 1237 is generally regarded as one of the most prosperous and influential chapters in the history of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate.
